Brisbane’s 1 William Street takes the global stage with ‘World Leadership’ rating

Cbus Property and ISPT’s 1 William Street, Brisbane has taken the global stage in terms of sustainability best practice, recently receiving a 6-Star Green Star - Performance ‘World Leadership’ rating


Considered one of Brisbane’s landmark office addresses and home to the State Government, 1 William is one of only 16 buildings in Australia and one of three in Queensland to receive this top level of certification. 

The building has also been recognised as Queensland’s very first 6-Star Green Star As-Built and 6-Star Green Star - Performance rated building with the combined rating recognising achievements across a range of categories including Building Management, Indoor Environment Quality, Energy, Transport, Water, Materials, Land Use and Ecology, Emissions and Innovation.  

NABERS Head of Technical Standards, Mr Dennis Lee said, “1 William Street was one of the first buildings to be rated under the NABERS co-asses pilot, capturing not only achievements in the traditional Base Building rating, which only shows 50% of energy use, but also rates the tenancy, providing a whole picture of the building impact.”

Cbus Property’s Executive Manager of Asset Management, Mr Chris Hardy said, “as joint owners, Cbus Property and ISPT are very proud to have 1 William Street recognised as Global Best Practice in sustainability through design and operation. When the State Government released their initial brief, we wanted to be proactive in partnering with them to construct a building that not only aligned with their comprehensive sustainability requirements, but exceeded them.” 

JLL’s 1 William Street Management team worked with an internal Green Star accredited professional to manage the Green Star certification process and to coordinate the activities and documentation directly with the site team, which streamlined the overall process. 

John McBeath, General Manager of 1 William Street and National Director at JLL said, “sustainability initiatives are a major focus at JLL and we have worked with building owners nationally to help achieve 11 of the 16 ‘World Leadership’ Green Star - Performance rated buildings in Australia.”

Green Building Council of Australia Chief Executive Officer Romilly Madew said, “1 William Street, Brisbane is a stand-out example of the world-leading sustainability outcomes that can be achieved through collaboration when not only industry, but also the government, value and prioritise the benefits of green buildings.”
