Global property services firm JLL has reached a one-year milestone in its business relationship with Indigenous supplier S&M Contracting, while also meeting its goals of upskilling and employing additional indigenous tradesman.

S&M Contracting – a majority owned and operated Australian Indigenous Company - has become a preferred supplier on a number of the ANZ Banking Group’s branch upgrades, a program of work managed by JLL’s Project Management business.

The company, which provides a range of maintenance and project services, was founded by Mark Fisher & Shane Jacobs.  JLL has an existing business relationship with Mr Jacobs through a joint-venture, Evolve FM; the only majority Indigenous-owned full service facilities management company in Australia.

JLL’s Jonathan Mills,  Capital Works Manager to the ANZ Account, said, “As a result of its focus on excellence, safety and a specialised expertise on minor works projects with a national reach, S&M Consulting has quickly become JLL’s top provider for minor works services across Australia on the ANZ Account. This has been a great outcome for JLL, ANZ and S&M, who have recently been able to expand the ANZ Account team by two additional indigenous tradesman.

“S&M Contracting has met every deadline, a great achievement given that many sites are in rural locations creating added complexity,” said Mr Mills.

ANZ Group Property’s Head of Program Management Office and Best Practice, Julie Dorrian, said, “Both ANZ and JLL are committed to partnering with Indigenous companies and have achieved a real tangible outcome with S&M Contracting in its delivery of minor works across the ANZ portfolio. This supports the commitments of ANZ’s Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) increasing Indigenous businesses in our supply chain.”

S&M Contracting Managing Director, Shane Jacobs said, “We work closely with local Indigenous stakeholders and impacted communities to support participation and employment in projects. This provides employment during the project and long-term economic benefits through skills and capability development in communities.

“Career paths are encouraged at entry level through our structured Wellbeing and Support Programme, designed to attract Indigenous men and women from local communities, to trainee and apprenticeship positions, who are committed to building a career in the commercial sector of our industry.

“Equally important, our open and inclusive culture encourages staff to grow with the organisation. We place a high priority on the retention and development of our people, and enjoy a low employee turnover rate,” said Mr Jacobs.

Mr Jacobs is a descendant of the Wiradjuri Nation and grew up in Sydney with strong ties to the La Perouse community who are members of the La Perouse Local Aboriginal Land Council.
