JLL and HSBC take home change management award

Latest research in neuroscience and human behaviour informs winning approach at the Australian Business Awards.

​JLL and HSBC have won the Australian Business Awards Change Management award for HSBC Australia's office environment revamp, and implementation of a dual site CBD strategy for 1,400 staff working across Parramatta and Barangaroo.

Nathan Sri, JLL's Director, Workplace Strategy said, "Whereas most organisations focus on behavioural change after they move to the new workplace, we focused on encouraging new behaviours well before HSBC moved. Effectively, we had company-wide adoption of Activity Based Working (ABW) well before HSBC moved into Barangaroo."

"Our ability to leverage the latest research into brain science to develop our change management strategies has been integral to HSBC's success, allowing the bank to sustain behaviour changes that are fundamental to the success of any workplace program." 

The workplace change management scope for HSBC Australia included:

  1. Design, build and fit out of the National Client Service and Operations Centre in Parramatta, including accommodating 200 existing staff during the build and then relocating 200 staff from the Head Office in Sydney CBD.
  2. Design, build, fit out and relocation of HSBC's head office, in which 850 staff moved to Barangaroo, ITS1
  3. Implementation of OpenWork, HSBC's Activity Based Working model across both sites

The foundation of the HSBC workplace change program was to provide a fit-for-purpose working environment, offering staff different locations and options depending on the type of work and tasks to be performed.  

Brenton Hush, Chief Operating Officer, HSBC Australia said, "The benefits of the new workspace – whether they be a reduction in meetings or simply a change in where people sit each day – have all contributed to a lift in productivity and a happier workforce.

"It's a testament to how quickly colleagues have embraced these new working behaviours and abandoned old habits, such as fixed-desk working.

"Already we're received interest from other HSBC markets to learn from Australia's successes, as they seek to encourage teams to make the shift towards more modern ways of working," he added.
