Australian Retail Market Overview 4Q21

4Q21 statistics on the national Australia Retail markets.

February 14, 2022

Transaction volumes totalled AUD 7.3 billion in 4Q21 bringing the total for 2021 to AUD 13.3 billion, a record high for Australia by a significant margin.

The resurgence in transaction activity throughout 2021, following a risk averse market in 2020, displayed strong investor demand for a range of asset types across discretionary and non-discretionary. Noticeably, renewed investor interest for large retail assets drove transactions for the latter part of 2021 – a trend anticipated to continue over the next 12 months.

The emergence of the ‘omicron variant’ wave mid-December 2021 anecdotally has caused a greater-than-usual slow down in retail sales over January. We anticipate the disruptions caused by the rapid rise in COVID-19 case numbers to translate in the upcoming retail turnover figures for January before gradually recovering in the near term.
