After 20 years in the Army, Nigel knew the high-level communication skills and appreciation for teamwork he’d developed would equip him for success in his new role at JLL.
“In the Army, I learnt how to communicate with people at all levels and how to work smart, and hard, in a team to achieve goals,” he says. “Today, I lead a high achieving team which is spread out across the country, so daily communication is vital to ensure everyone is on track and working towards achieving the team’s goals.”
Nigel landed his role at JLL in October 2018 after leaving a property management position with Defence. Over the past three years, he’s discovered the work ethic and practical skills that were key in his role with the Australian Defence Force (ADF) are highly valued in the business world.

“At JLL, my Director is very supportive and leaves me to my own devices to manage, lead and deliver results. In the Army, I learnt the importance of being confident in everything you do which has helped me to make this transition to a civilian role,” Nigel says. “The skills I have developed to lead, mentor, teach and train the people around me were all integral to the role I had in the Army but have underpinned the success of our team at JLL.
“I’d urge all veterans who are looking to move into civilian life to be confident about the skills they have learnt during their service because they can be applied across a wide range of business roles.”
