With a distinguished 14 years in the Army under his belt, Luke McMahon was searching for a lifestyle change when he found his role at JLL.

As a Senior Project Manager at JLL, Luke’s career has come full circle with the role utilising his unique and highly valued skillset to work on infrastructure projects for Defence.

During his time in the Army, Luke toured Australia, went overseas on a peacekeeping tour of Egypt and Israel, and was deployed to the Middle East for the Iraq campaign. These experiences forged lifelong skills, including the ability to balance detailed planning alongside an understanding of the ‘big picture’ in all activities, and the mental discipline to develop and analyse options during decision making. It also taught Luke confidence in assessing and taking risks, something that benefitted him in his transition to civilian life.

Leveraging his transferrable expertise from the military in telecommunications engineering and management, Luke worked in various roles across the infrastructure project management space once he left the Army.

The job opportunity at JLL came to Luke after he moved to Darwin in pursuit of a lifestyle change. That was seven years ago, and during this time at the company he has enjoyed wide-ranging career and professional development opportunities, continuing to draw from his time in Defence and on deployment to assist in managing various infrastructure developments.

Harnessing his leadership experience, Luke is now responsible for directing assigned reports and providing ongoing technical and professional guidance to younger team members.

“As an older ex-serviceman, I’m particularly relishing the opportunity to ‘give back’ to the Australian Defence Force,” says Luke. “It’s satisfying to know that my management of infrastructure developments has a lasting positive impact to Defence’s capability.”

This dedication to giving back extends well outside of his role at JLL, with Luke having recently completed an eight day trek of the Kokoda Trail in Papua New Guinea, raising funds for Australian veterans charity, Legacy.
